Goose Pulling – Belgium
Goose Pulling, once common across Europe, still survives today in parts of Belgium—though it’s no longer as gruesome as it sounds. In this tradition, a dead goose is suspended from a rope, and costumed horsemen gallop by, trying to pull off its head. The one who succeeds is crowned king for the year. It’s a festival rooted in medieval customs, and yes—it sparks plenty of animal rights debates.
Today, the goose is usually already dead before the event, and in some areas, a fake one is used. But even with modern tweaks, the sheer oddity of the activity raises eyebrows. Participants in full traditional garb, parades, and celebratory beer create a festive (and totally bizarre) atmosphere that outsiders can hardly believe is real. It’s weird, it’s loud, and it’s 100% Belgian.
