Cimburijada – Bosnia and Herzegovina
In the city of Zenica, locals celebrate the first day of spring by gathering at dawn to cook and eat massive amounts of scrambled eggs by the river. Known as Cimburijada, or “Scrambled Egg Festival,” it’s part breakfast picnic, part pagan homage to rebirth.
Tons of eggs are prepared in massive pans, often using river water. Traditional music and dancing follow, as do political speeches and beer. While charming, the scale and devotion to egg-based celebration makes it an egg-ceptionally odd tradition to the outside world.
