Iron Lung Sit-Up Bench
This intimidating bench had a crank, chains, and weights attached to a backboard that moved while you did sit-ups. The idea? The machine would “assist” your sit-ups, adding resistance for a more effective core workout. In reality, it looked like something Frankenstein would lie on before being zapped to life.
The adjustable crank often jammed, trapping users mid-rep. The weights could swing unpredictably, and the incline was so steep it turned sit-ups into death-defying acts. It might have worked your core—but it definitely worked your fear response, too. Few cried when this one vanished from fitness centers.
