With an astounding population exceeding 1.42 billion, China is known as one of the most densely populated countries in the world. As a natural consequence of this population density, the country grapples with some of the most notorious traffic congestion on a global scale. The sheer number of people and vehicles traversing the road network frequently leads to epic traffic jams.

This photograph was taken on the Beijing-Hong Kong-Macau Expressway in 2010. Yes, that’s roughly 50 lanes completely choked with traffic. Unbelievably, this traffic jam lasted for a staggering 12 days.
