More Than Just Curiosity
Mr. Harris nodded slowly, his eyes narrowing slightly as he processed her response. “Very well, I see…” he murmured, as he reached up to scratch the back of his head, clearly trying to phrase his next question carefully. “Do you happen to know… where he got this ring?” His tone was polite, but there was a definite edge of urgency to it, something Melissa couldn’t quite place.
Melissa shook her head with a small shrug. “I always assumed he bought it from a jewelry store,” she replied honestly. There hadn’t been any reason to question it before. Why would she? But now, with Mr. Harris acting so strangely and asking all these questions, her confidence in that assumption began to waver. Why would the origin of the ring matter so much—unless it wasn’t just a gift after all?
