Memories She Tried to Forget
Melissa’s cheeks flushed a soft pink as she answered. “My ex-boyfriend gave it to me a few years ago,” she said quietly. It felt strange to say it out loud again. The relationship had ended a while back, and she had buried most of the memories associated with it. Now they were being stirred up by a stranger who suddenly seemed to care a little too much about an old ring.
She explained briefly that they weren’t in contact anymore, and she had simply decided it was time to let the ring go. What use was a reminder of a relationship that no longer held any value? It had become just a thing—something she no longer wanted to carry with her. But Mr. Harris didn’t look satisfied. In fact, her answer only seemed to deepen his concern, which made her start to question everything she thought she knew about that gift.
