He Comes Back Different


Melissa straightened up as soon as she heard footsteps approaching. Mr. Harris’s voice echoed faintly from the back—“Aha! There it is”—followed by the sound of quick steps on the wooden floor. She felt a brief wave of relief, assuming the awkward moment was finally over. Maybe he’d found whatever he needed, and she could finally complete the sale and go home.

But the look on Mr. Harris’s face as he reappeared was anything but routine. He didn’t smile or greet her. Instead, his expression was tight, focused—bordering on grim. Melissa sensed immediately that something had changed during his time in the back. The transaction she expected was no longer simple. Whatever he had discovered had clearly rattled him.
