Betrayal and Bitterness
“Well, my ex-boyfriend gave it to me,” Melissa began, her voice tinged with both sarcasm and pain. “Right before he cheated on me with my best friend. I still haven’t forgiven either of them for it, and honestly, I doubt I ever will.” Her words spilled out quickly, a mix of resentment and years of bottled-up emotion. The ring, now resting at the center of this mystery, had once symbolized a lie.
She was about to continue when one of the officers raised a hand, cutting her off. “Alright, alright, we get it. Cut to the chase now, will you?” he said, clearly uninterested in the personal drama behind the ring. The sudden interruption left Melissa feeling a little humiliated, as if her story didn’t matter. But deep down, she still didn’t understand why they cared about this ring so much.
