“The ring?” Melissa repeated, her voice sharp with disbelief. “What about the ring? I already explained everything to Mr. Harris,” she insisted. The officers didn’t flinch. Officer Davis responded evenly, “We want to hear it from you again—this time, with us. Where did you get it?” There was a subtle firmness in his tone, the kind that meant she wasn’t leaving until he was satisfied with her answer.

Melissa stared at them, struggling to grasp the gravity of the situation. What could possibly be so serious about a ring that it required this kind of questioning? She had brought it in for appraisal—not for drama. The more they pressed, the less it made sense. She wasn’t a criminal. But the way they looked at her made her feel like they already suspected otherwise.
