Facing the Questions


Her thoughts were interrupted when the door creaked open again. Officer Johnson, the one who had brought her in, returned—but this time, he wasn’t alone. A second officer stepped in beside him, more formal in demeanor. “Hi, Melissa,” he said with a nod. “I’m Officer Davis. I see you’ve already met my colleague, Officer Johnson.” His voice was even, but it carried a quiet authority.

Without wasting time, he got to the point. “Now, I want you to tell us about that ring.” Melissa sat up straighter, surprised by how quickly they brought it up. Her heart pounded faster, and she could feel a fresh wave of anxiety building in her chest. So this was really about the ring. But what could possibly be wrong with it?
