Not Under Arrest—Yet
As they walked toward the police vehicle, the officer glanced back and said, “Just so you know, I’m not arresting you… yet. I’m taking you in for questioning. If you can prove you haven’t done anything wrong, we’ll let you go. But you’ll need to convince us.” His words weren’t meant to comfort—they were a warning, plain and clear.
Melissa tried to swallow the lump forming in her throat. So she wasn’t under arrest, but she also wasn’t free. The uncertainty made everything worse. What exactly did they think she had done? What evidence could they possibly have? She felt like she was walking into a trap, and there was no way out except through answers she didn’t even know she needed to give.
