Public Shame
Melissa’s eyes filled with tears as she slid into the back seat of the police car. It wasn’t just the fear that got to her—it was the embarrassment. People outside the shop had turned to look. A few had even paused to whisper to one another. What must they be thinking? To them, she probably looked like a criminal being hauled away.
She wiped her tears quickly, not wanting to show how deeply shaken she really was. Still, it was hard to breathe normally, hard to stay calm when her world had just turned upside down without warning. She had no clue what she was being accused of, and the fear of the unknown was almost worse than the humiliation of being seen like this.
