A Curious Delay
Melissa had never once considered asking her ex where he had gotten the ring. That just seemed too awkward—why question a gift, especially when the relationship had been in full bloom at the time? She shrugged off the thought as she listened to Mr. Harris. “Well, I actually need to discuss this with a colleague before I can buy it from you,” he said. “They’re on their way now—it shouldn’t take long. Would you like a cup of coffee or tea while you wait?”
His request seemed polite enough, and Melissa didn’t suspect anything unusual. She figured it made sense for professionals to consult with others, especially for valuable items. Still, a small part of her was surprised. Wasn’t this just a basic ring? Why the extra steps? She smiled faintly and nodded, “Tea would be nice, thank you.” Though she didn’t realize it, this small delay would soon become the turning point of her entire day.
