Going to the Bathroom Was Very Different in Ancient Times
In ancient Rome, going to the bathroom was a social event. People would sit in rows on public benches with no separation whatsoever, and they’d chat while doing their business. Toilet paper didn’t exist either; they used sticks wrapped in cloth, leaves, or even sponges.
From today’s point of view, the whole system was unhygienic and deeply uncomfortable. And pity the workers in charge of cleaning those public latrines… probably one of the worst jobs in history.
