Lard Was Used as Hair Gel

Towering hairstyles were a huge fashion statement in the 18th century – literally. And to keep these sky-high creations in place, they needed a special something: a thick pomade made from pig or sheep fat, which was generously applied like modern-day hair gel.

The downside? Pretty gross – because not washing it for days led to nasty smells and even infestations. Beauty might have been striking, but it definitely wasn’t clean.
