Going to the Toilet Was Very Different in the Past

In ancient Rome, going to the toilet was a social event. People sat in rows on public stone benches – without any partitions – and chatted happily with each other. Toilet paper didn’t exist; instead, they used sticks wrapped in cloth, leaves, or even sponges.

By today’s standards, the whole thing was not only unhygienic but also pretty unpleasant. And one can only feel sorry for the poor workers who had to clean these public latrines – probably one of the worst jobs in history.
