Fresh Breath Thanks to Urine

Today, a splash of minty mouthwash is enough to freshen up after a garlic-heavy meal. However, in the 18th century, they resorted to a much more disgusting remedy: urine. Due to the ammonia it contained, it was considered a disinfectant and supposedly also had teeth-whitening properties.

This practice wasn’t new – even the ancient Romans swore by it. Even if it theoretically might have worked, the mere thought of it today is disgusting enough to ruin your appetite. Fortunately, oral hygiene has improved significantly since then.
