Shaken by Mark’s account, John resolved to investigate the noises himself. “I need to hear this with my own ears,” he told Emily.
That night, John prepared to stay awake, armed with a flashlight, a notebook, and determination. Emily watched him set up with a worried look.
“Be careful,” she urged. “I will,” John replied, giving Max a reassuring pat.
Max stood alert, as if already anticipating what the night might bring.
