Storseisundet Bridge (Norway)

The Storseisundet Bridge in Norway connects the Norwegian mainland with the island of Averøy. It’s a state-built bridge, essentially a national highway. When viewed from the road, it forms a beautiful parabola, and the bridge itself has a graceful, gently sloping arch. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to shout out with joy. However, building this bridge was no easy feat.

This is because the area is prone to severe hurricanes, and construction took six long years. Moreover, it was hit by hurricanes a staggering 12 times during that period. The bridge cost a significant amount of money, but about 75% was covered by public grants, with the remainder recovered through tolls. Initially, it was projected to take 15 years to recoup the costs, but it was actually achieved in about 10 years, and it became a toll-free road after June 1999.
