Snakes That Fake Rattles

Some harmless snakes have evolved to impersonate venomous ones. For example, the milk snake and the coral snake look nearly identical, but only the coral snake is dangerous. This mimicry keeps predators at bay—better safe than sorry, after all. Some non-venomous species will even flatten their heads or hiss loudly to exaggerate the effect.

Even crazier? Certain snakes shake their tails in dry leaves to mimic the sound of a rattlesnake’s warning. It’s not a rattle, but it works just as well to deter a hungry predator. This combination of visual and auditory trickery shows that survival doesn’t always mean strength—it often means performance.
