The Snake That Plays Cobra

The hognose snake is a harmless species with a flair for drama. When threatened, it flattens its neck like a cobra, hisses loudly, and strikes with a closed mouth. If that doesn’t work, it takes things up a notch—flipping onto its back, sticking out its tongue, and “dying” in the most theatrical way possible.

This Oscar-worthy performance can even include releasing foul-smelling fluids to complete the effect. If turned right-side up, the snake will flip over again, committed to its role. It’s survival by dramatic overacting—and predators often buy the show.
