Tuskfish That Use Tools
Tool use isn’t just for primates. Tuskfish have been seen using rocks to crack open clam shells. Holding the shell in their mouths, they repeatedly smash it against a specific rock until it breaks. This behavior requires planning and muscle coordination, making it one of the few confirmed cases of tool use in fish.
Scientists have observed individual fish returning to the same “anvil” rock over and over again, suggesting learned behavior. It’s not instinct alone—there’s memory, precision, and possibly even teaching involved. Who knew a fish could MacGyver its way into dinner?
